Danny Black

Danny Black was a member of the Philly based indie folk trio Good Old War. He is currently on tour as a multi instrumentalist (guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, keyboards and backing vocals) with Gregory Alan Isakov and has shared the stage with Alison Krauss & Union Station, Counting Crows, Josh Ritter, Guster, Joshua Radin, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats, Dispatch and many more. Black delivers knotty and evocative instrumental guitar music that draws inspiration from Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, Robert Fripp and John Carpenter. Danny released his first solo outing, “Adventure Soundtrack” on Nettwerk Music Group in 2017 and toured extensively. In 2019, Black released his second solo album, Themes to great acclaim and further cemented his status as a technically gifted and original voice in instrumental guitar music.

On Black Ryno, Danny Black’s 3rd solo album, listeners will immediately hear a shift in musical style. The most noticeable is that there are no instrumental pieces. Danny is now the lead singer. Black reflects on the songwriting process: “I planned on making a heavier album with Ryno (Ryan Zimmaro) on drums and reaching out to singers to re-sing my ideas. Eventually, I found that my placeholder vocals sounded good to me.” Fans of Good Old War will also enjoy a cameo appearance by frontman Keith Goodwin on the track Immoral Guidance. Zimmaro’s relentless, groove based drumming on the album is also notable. “Ryan and I only had to spend one day together. He came over and I recorded him playing beats off the top of his head. We had an absolute blast. He’s such an inspiring player that it was easy for me to write to.” Black Ryno was be released 11/13/2020 on Umbrella Man Records
